Abstract
Communication to the newspaper from “Truth and Justice” about the pricing of freight on the steam boat New Orleans.
Transcript
COMMUNICATION. The gentlemen named agreeably to law by his Excellency Governor Claiborne to examine the Steam Boat and report to him-have committed an error, which they will no doubt testify. They certify that the average prices of freight, paid for articles brought in boats to and from Natches to this place was two dollars for a bale of cotton, and the same sum for a barrel, and other articles in proportion; and accordingly allow the Steam Boat to charge one dollar and fifty cents per bale and barrel. The fact is, that not more than one dollar and fifty cents freight has been paid for a bale of cotton from Natchez for three years past, and the same for a barrel's bulk from this up-but very frequently less. We have had cotton carried for one dollar per bale, and we appeal to Messrs Morris, Wiley, Mitchell, Palmer, or any other person who has a barge, as to the fact. This season, in particular, no person has paid more than one dollar per bale for cotton. Truth & Justice
