Broadband magnetotelluric study of the axial fault region of the New Madrid Seismic Zone

Abstract

Presented here are three 2D resistivity cross-sections of the axial fault region within the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), obtained using broadband magnetotelluric (MT) equipment, which surpasses the resolution of previous long period MT equipment. By integrating the seismicity distribution into the model, we aim to examine the potential influence of stress buildup (indicated by high resistivity due to pore fluid contraction) and fluid presence (indicated by a relatively conductive region in the crust) on seismic activity. These results offer valuable insights into the controversial topic of NMSZ seismicity and contribute to our understanding of intraplate seismic phenomena.
