Bowl and Jar Compound Vessel

Part of the David Dye Pottery Photographs Exhibit

Description

Compound vessels were widely used in the Mississippian world. This vessel has a shallow bowl sitting atop a jar, which has a notched rim, four strap handles, and vertical incised lines. Jars such as this one would have been the property of an elite clan or household at Chucalissa. Based on the parallel, vertical lines, this form would date between approximately AD 1400 and 1500.
