Bowl With Three Engraved Lines

Part of the David Dye Pottery Photographs Exhibit.

Description

A bowl with three engraved lines encircling the rim appears to illustrate a high ranking member of society, marked by pierced ears, which often held copper-covered wooden regalia. The flange-like protrusion as the side of the head may be either a type of head-gear or the hair pulled into braided side-locks. The proturberance on the forehead is a hair knot, which often exhibited a string of shell beads. The bowl, which dates to the fourteenth century, has been used repeatedly, based on the exterior and interior wear evident in the photograph.
