Abstract

Many cello works by female composers from the late nineteenth century have been discovered and performed. However, not many of these works have been introduced to the intermediate-level students. This document aims to fill that gap by introducing four cello works by four different female composers from the late nineteenth century that are suitable for intermediate cello study. These pieces are Agnes Zimmermann’s Cello Sonata in G minor, Mary Carr Moore’s Love Song, for cello and piano, Rebecca Clarke’s Two Pieces for violin or viola and cello, and Alice Verne-Bredt’s Wiegenlied (Lullaby), for violin or cello and piano. The document explores the technical knowledge of intermediate-level cello study with these four cello pieces. This includes thumb position, left-hand pizzicato, shifting between positions, double stops, and bowing techniques. By emphasizing the technical elements associated with these cello works, I hope to inspire both students and educators to discover and appreciate the works by these women composers.
