Abstract

Moore Joseph M., The Sonata for B-flat Trumpet and Piano by Burnet Corwin Tuthill: A Guide to Performance Practice. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance). The focus of this dissertation is the Sonata for B-flat Trumpet and Piano, op. 29 by Burnet Corwin Tuthill (1888-1982). This work explores the life of Burnet Tuthill, with principal focus on the aforementioned work. Burnet Tuthill was an influential composer in the United States during the early part of the twentieth century, composing in a variety of mediums and expanding the brass repertoire through his work with the National Association of Schools of Music. This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter serves as an introduction and offers the state and methods of research and thesis for why this was chosen. Chapter Two focuses on Tuthill’s life, musical education and background, and his influences which led to his compositional output. Excerpts of interviews with individuals who knew Tuthill are included, with complete transcripts included in the appendices. Additionally, considerations of his other brass works are offered but only broadly. Because the nature of this paper concerns the Sonata op. 29, other solo brass literature is considered but only broadly. Chapter Three centers on a guide to the performance practice of his Sonata for B-flat Trumpet and Piano, op. 29. Historical and theoretical considerations are offered, as well as musical analysis of each movement. From this, considerations for performance practice are offered. This chapter concludes with pedagogical application of these analyses and considerations that could benefit the present-day trumpet student as they prepare to perform this repertoire and others. The fourth and final chapter serves to advocate for why this piece is an important part of the twentieth-century trumpet sonata.
