Abstract

Shifting from clinical practice to academic teaching presents many challenges for dental hygienists. This qualitative case study examines the experiences of dental hygienists as they shift into educator roles within the academic setting. Although they are hired based on clinical expertise, they frequently encounter challenges due to a lack of knowledge or skills required for the educational demands of teaching. Much of this must be learned on the job through practical experiences, highlighting a gap between clinical experience and the competencies needed to fulfill an educator’s role effectively. The study focuses on the obstacles encountered, how they learn as educators, and the resources necessary for professional development. Six participants were chosen through purposeful sampling from a dental hygiene program within a dental college. Data collection included semi-structured interviews and participant journaling, providing insights into the complexities of becoming an educator. Through a reflexive thematic analysis, three key themes were identified: (1) Unforeseen challenges and surprises in shifting to an educator role, (2) Gap between clinical experience and teaching preparedness, and (3) Educator development: Growing through experiences and continuous learning. The themes illustrate the experiences of dental hygiene educators and the processes through which they evolve in their roles. The findings highlight the importance of institutions developing targeted strategies, such as comprehensive onboarding, specialized training programs, and mentorship, to better support educators in their shift and ongoing professional development.
