Description

This book is a twentieth anniversary retrospective on the Peace Corps and its accomplishments. It is written by Gerard T. Rice, Ph.D., and is produced by the agency. Beginning with a preface from then Peace Corps director Loret Miller Ruppe, the book goes on to discuss the Peace Corps’ origins, its history and actions over the twenty years from 1961 – 1981, and an overview of its accomplishments. The three primary goals of the Peace Corps that it discusses are the goals of: making a difference in the global community, fostering a better understanding between global communities in the name of global interdependence and community, and educating the American population on world issues through direct contact and volunteering with other cultures. Information on Peace Corps host countries, volunteer statistics, important dates in the agency’s history, anecdotes and statements from volunteers, statements from host countries’ leadership, and more are presented in this book.

The book concludes with a “look forward” for the agency and a description of what the Peace Corps can do in the 1980s and beyond. The conclusion focuses on the Peace Corps’ value to the world and United States through its third goal – educating Americans on the world through direct contact with other cultures. The conclusion further expands on the Peace Corps’ value to the United States as a part of foreign relations strategy. It ends with a footnotes/bibliography section, another message from then director Loret Miller Ruppe, a map, and a timeline.
