Description

This brief document was created around the Peace Corps' 20th anniversary, and is an overview of what the Peace Corps does, how its volunteers are trained and selected, and how the Peace Corps works with host countries to send volunteers to specific locations. This document orients its descriptions of the Peace Corps on its three goals; which are, per the Peace Corps Act of 1961:

  1. "to promote world peace and friendship by making available to interested countries Americans willing to serve overseas who will help people of these countries to meet their needs for trained manpower;
  2. "to help promote a better understanding of the American people on the part of people served; and
  3. "to promote a better understanding of other people on the part of the American people" [p.1].

The document additionally explains how the Peace Corps' goal is to support local efforts of development and that it aims to foster peace through global connection and interdependence. "A peace based on an encouragement of difference, a respect for all peoples, and a belief in mutual strength through interdependence is a fragile concept" [p.13].

Short summaries of each section is provided, on the sides of the pages, in both Spanish and French.
