The school began as Memphis Vocational High School in 1911 in the former Memphis High School building at 317 Poplar. It was renamed Crockett Vocational High School in 1918 and then Crockett Technical High School in 1921. The Memphis School Board bought the nearby Van Vleet mansion and replaced it with a new school building that opened in 1928 as Memphis Technical High School.
