Description
A lease contract for Celia Burris for the Freedmen's Department to rent her school room near the corner of Linden and Turby Street. The rental dates are 1864 October 31 - 1865 June 30th. Burris was paid $150.00 in eight installments at the first of each month. The contract says that Burris is responsible for "fitting up said house including flues for stoves, windows, etc. She is to put in one coal stove and pipe and with the exception of damages done in school hours she is to keep the house in repair." The contract is signed by Captain T. A. Walker, Superintendent of the Freedmen's Bureau West Tennessee, Memphis, TN, on 1864 October 19.
