Transcript
Earthquake.--An alarming earthquake was felt in this town and the adjoining country as far as we have heard about 15 m. past two o'clock yesterday morning. The shocks which continued until after day, (unreadable)ere some of them very severe-so much so that the heaviest houses seemed to be racked to pieces, however, we have heard of normal injury sustained except the fall of some chimnies in the country. This being the 1st shock of the kind ever felt in the place and commencing at the hour it did terrified the citizens at first very much until recollection assigned the true cause of the dreadful visitation. It is pretty generally supposed that an eruption or corrosion must have taken place in the south, and we wait with anxiety until we hear from the southern country. We rather incline to suppose it however to be an eruption of the volcano to the west mentioned by Lewis and Clark. The atmosphere continued dark, and apprehension are entertained of another shock---very little air is stirring.--Nashville Clarion.
