Abstract
Commentary of the politics of relief supplies for the Caribbean earthquake instead of a famine in the Canary islands.
Transcript
Humanity.--It has been voted in Congress to suffer the exportation, to a certain amount, of flour to the distressed inhabitant of the Spanish main, who have lately suffered so much from terrible earthquakes. So far very well - But a motion to extend the relief to the Canary Islands, the inhabitants of which are said to be suffering most severely from fever and scarcity, was negatived in the house!-because (for one reason) it was said to be less our interest to conciliate the latter people, than those on our own Continent. It was also stated that the information from the Canaries was less certain than that from Caraccas, &c.
