Abstract
Account of damage on the Mississippi river south of the Mouth of the Ohio. Recounts that damage was heavy for 90 miles and that was more severe on the west side than the east.
Transcript
From the mouth of the Ohio 90 miles down the Mississippi, a great proportion of the banks sunk or fell in during the earthquakes about Dec. 15. An island sunk considerably, and much of the land was cracked. Innumerable old trees, at the bottom of the river, were thrown up so that much of them projected above the water. In one case about 300 acres of the bank and near it, fell in. The damage was greater on the western than on the eastern side of the river.
