EARTHQUAKES. A shock of an Earthquake was distinctly felt in this town yesterday morning, about 20 minutes after nine o'clock. Its duration was supposed to be about 30 seconds, and its motion from N. W. to S. E. Considerable sensation was excited by this event. [Alexandria paper. A shock of an Earthquake was felt at Jamaica, L. I. a little after 9 o'clock, on Thursday evening. About the same time a noise was heard in this city, which by some, was said to be an Earthquake. [N. York Gaz. A gentleman, descending the Mississippi, experienced, on the morning of the 16th Dec. a sensible jar of some distant convulsion; that for several subsequent days, he heard a distant noise, like thunder, which was conjectured to be caused by some volcanic operations far to the west of the valley of the Missisippi.
