    Abstract

    Felt report from Washington, dated January 23, 1812: “There has been two shocks of an Earthquake felt here today, one at three and the other at 9 o’clock. There has been a fissure in the canopy of the Capitol; it has become , at least one quarter of an inch wider in the breach.”

    A letter from Washington, dated January 23, says, "There has been two shocks of an Earthquake felt here to-day, one at 3 and the other at 9 o'clock. There has been a fissure in the canopy of the Capitol; it has become, at least, one quarter of an inch wider in the breach.
