Abstract
Allegorical reference to the New Madrid earthquakes. “ Poor Madison is trembling in his Palace, and all his Jerusalem with him. A star from the East has made its appearance in Washington, which has occasioned him more trouble, than that of old did to Herod and the Jews-he will not be President again-so say the Prophets!”

Extract of a letter from Washington, dated Dec. 30, 1811. "Poor Madison is trembling in his Palace, and all his Jerusalem with him. A star from the East has made its appearance in Washington, which has occasioned him more trouble, than that of old did to Herod and the Jews-he will not be President again-so say the Prophets! "You seem to understand the supposed deep game they are playing here, which I call shallow. No one pretends that war is the object, or that men will be raised, or frigates built. The only hope entertained, is that the orders in council will be repealed, and that thereby poor Madison will be relieved from the noose which Bona has so craftily wound round his delicate neck. "There appears to be some prospect of this, as the Executive have engaged many Federalists to write to their friends in England to use their influence to have them taken off. Some pretend there will be a second E------ne arrangement, but this I do not believe. But nothing can save M. and Co. from disgrace, but the repeal of those cursed orders."
