Extract of a letter from Manchester of Jan. 2. --"Our manufactures have lately experienced a considerable rise in price, owing to several causes-the first which may be mentioned is the decreased quantity manufactured; another, the considerable relief in the monied community; with some other causes, which are however, distinct from any expectation of a demand for the U. States. Scotch goods may be stated to have rised on an average about twenty per cent and Manchester and woolen goods about 10 per cent." A severe shock of an earthquake was felt at Gosport in England, in December last, which also agitated the vessels in Portsmouth harbour. The price of flour in France is as high as 18 and 20 dollars. This being the case, and on account of the scarcity, the French armies will be obliged to abandon the peninsula. The 18th of Dec. at 55 min. after 11 in the evening, a shock of an Earthquake was felt at Verona, which continued 3 seconds. Fortunately no damage was sustained. On the 12th of Dec. at half past 8 in the evening, two severe shocks of an earthquake were felt at Marienberg, Saxony. The hopes and fears of Miss Tylney Long's despairing suitors will be terminated some time the ensuing week, by her union with Mr. W. Pole, jun. The splendor of preparation for this event, is said to amply correspond with the overflowing wealth of the Lady. Four French spies have been arrested in Sicily. They have confessed they were sent by the French General Manches to murder a British officer. One of them has been executed, two others were to share the same fate, and one was killed in arresting them.
