Abstract
Report of an earthquake at Oxford, England in January 1812.
Transcript
Oxford, Jan. 26. - Earthquake. -- On Saturday last, the shock of an earthquake was felt in many places in this and the neighbouring counties. We have accounts from Tetsworth, Islip, Bletchingdon, Radley, Wolvercot, and many other villages, which mention that the windows were much shaken, and in many houses the shock was plainly felt by the alarmed inhabitants. It was accompanied by a deep, rumbling noise, familiar to the sound of a distant discharge on heavy ordnance. A gentleman of this city, walking in Christ Church meadow, heard this noise very plainly, and from its uncommon sound, he immediately guessed it must proceed from an earthquake. In some places this noise was heard for upwards of ten minutes.
