Abstract
Report on Non New Madrid earthquakes from the Porto Rico Gazette
Transcript
We learn, from the Porto Rico Gazette of the 20th of April that the expedition of Cumana entered the river of Oroniko the 18th of Feb. On the 6th of March, they were attacked by the naval force of Guayana and after three hours battle the latter were obliged to retire for want of ammunition. On the 28th, after having obtained a supply of ammunition, &c. they made a second attack; and after nine hours battle, they took 20 launches, burnt 5, and sank 3. They also took a schooner with about 15,000 wt, of powder, balls, &c. four 34, and two 36 pounders. The battle was very bloody, and the loss on the part of the Cumana expedition was very great. During the battle, an embarkation of 2500 men took place. about one days distance from Angustnra; but the Guayannens succeeded in burning their launches, and cutting off their retreat. It is expected they must have surrendered a few days after, or have crossed the river, by swimming, which it is believed is impracticable, on account of the width of the river, and the numerous alligators. No earthquake was felt at Guyana as late as the 28th of March.
