Abstract
Report from an Irish newspaper on the comet of 1811.
Transcript
The Comet has now nearly disappeared from the naked eye, although aided by the telescope, it is probable that it may be discernable until towards the end of February next. It is the opinion of a French Astronomer, that had its appearance been delayed about four or five months its approximation to the earth would have been so near, that its apparent diameter would have been ten times greater than it was, and its surface, consequently, one hundred times larger to the eye of a spectator on the earth. Its tail, in that case, would have been extended to the length of ninety degrees in the firmament,, occupying little less when the Comet was set, than the whole space, from the zenith to the verge of the sensible horizon. Imagination can scarcely add any thing to the terrific sublime of such a spectacle.
