Abstract
New Madrid earthquakes damage, eyewitness account. for the February 7, 1812. “Information(verbal) from a respectable source which entitles it to credit, states the Earthquake on Feb. 7, had broken up the country on the Mississippi, above & below New Madrid, for many miles in extent the land was broken into cracks, as described in the case of Little Prairie, out of which water rose and inundated the level land. The inhabitants of New Madrid, in escaping, had to travel miles in water two feet deep, which was warm, black and strongly scented with sulfur.”
