Abstract
Article that links earthquakes and comets to the surge in marriages in the Natchez area.
Transcript
We have been asked our opinion as to the causes of the frequency of the Marriages, which have lately taken place in this country, and are much puzzled in forming any rational or even plausible conjectures on the subject. The Comet must now be a too great a distance to have any considerable influence; the weather has not been favourable; and we know not what effects the earthquakes could have, unless by mingling some more stimulating ingredients with the Mississippi water. The most probable reason may be, that as the mad schemes and oppressive measures of government have put us to our last shift, we are adopting the last desperate expedient-TO LIVE AND LOVE!
