SONNET. TO RELIGION. HAIL, power benign! with whom, in days of yore, The Holy Seers of Palestina trod! Hail, Power benign! who, when this life is o'er, Will lead thy votaries to the realms of God Teach us to bow beneath the chastening rod Of Heaven, resign'd--and, when dread thunders roll, When Death appears in fire and in flood, And earth, affrighted, shakes from pole to pole, Breathe then a holy calmness in the soul! Teach us, on wings of Faith, to mount the skies, And view the Christian's long desired goal, Where every hope of future pleasure lies; For when the Sinner owns thy blest control, It matters not, or how, or when he dies. WALTER.
