Transcript
AUGUSTA, (Geo) January 14. Yesterday about 2 o'clock, the citizens of this place experienced a very sensible shock of an Earthquake, the sound of which appeared to pass from N. E. to S. W. It was supposed to continue about the space of 15 or 20 seconds; and we are informed that at some places the shock was so violen as to jar glasses & c. from the shelves of several houses. The atmosphere previous to the shock was not observed to exhibit any unusual appearance: the morning was clear and serene, with white frost, succeeded by a mild pleasant day. Immediately after the shock, the wind sprung up, a little to the southward of west, with some appearance of rain.
