    Abstract

    Synopsis account of the December 16, 1811 earthquake as reported by newspapers received by the The Supporter’s editor. Notes that the quake was felt in throughout Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana Territory, Western Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina. Effects noted bells ringing at Charleston, clocks stopping at Richmond, at Georgetown, South Carolina, settling of the parade ground.

    It appears by the papers that the shocks of the Earthquake have been felt, with more or less violence, throughout this state, Kentucky, Indiana, Ter. Tennessee, the western part of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, &c. At Norfolk and Richmond, (Va.) the clocks were all stopped; and at Charleston, (S. C.) 'so severe was the shocks that the parade ground of the fort settled from one to two inches below its former level. A tub of water sitting on a table in the barracks, was upset by the jarring of the building.'
