Abstract
Report from ship captain that earthquake was felt at Martinique on August 15, 1816.
Transcript
September 4. Capt. Brown informs that an earthquake was felt at Martinique on the 15th August, at 3 o'clock in the morning, which lasted a considerable time, and being unusually severe, excited great alarm among the inhabitants. Captain Mearns, of the British brig Jano, arrived here yesterday in 49 days from London, informs that the stagnation of business in London, was greater than ever before experienced, that such was the want of confidence among mercantile men, that if a good freight was offered, it was as promptly refused, from an apprehension that the person offering was about to fail. Failures took place daily, and for large amounts, with houses whose credit had been considered stable as a rock. Capt. M. mentioned the failure of a house in London that was largely interested in 40 Country banks. Between forty and sixty American vessels were loading in the London Docks for the United States.
