    Abstract

Felt report on the December 16, 1811 earthquake at Raleigh, North Carolina

    Transcript

Earthquake.--A smart shock of an Earthquake was felt in this city about 2 o'clock and again at 7 o'clock on Monday morning last. The latter it is said continued for forty seconds, shook the furniture of houses, and alarmed a committee then in session in the Senate chamber so much that they precipitately left the State House. The shock was not, as we can learn, accompanied with any noise. About one o'clock on Tuesday many persons describe a very curious shock and sensation which they experienced, attributable it is supposed to the highly electric state of the atmosphere. Some felt a sudden sensation of heat and giddiness, and the hats of the members of the House of Commons then in session, were lifted or moved upon their heads.
