MORE OF EARTHQUAKES! Extract of a letter from a gentleman of eminence in Tennessee to another in Raleigh, dated December 30, 1811. "I omitted one circumstance in my letter of to-day. Earthquakes began here yesterday was a fortnight; the first shock very severe. At Carthage, the upper part of a chimney was thrown down. The second shock was not long after: but not so strong. Six or seven in succession were felt on the first day; and two, three or four every day since. The last, this day, (Dec. 30) at three o'clock in the afternoon. A rumbling noise is constantly heard. It has been felt at Natchez, but only slightly. I understand the most severe shocks have been experienced in the mountains towards the Cherokees. I begin to think it true, though I did not at first, that eighteen or twenty acres have fallen in near Piney River, so far as to make the tops of the trees level with the ground. "I am not satisfied with the conjectures of some, that these earthquakes are occasioned by the volcanoes to the south west. After an eruption, shocks of this kind generally cease."
