Description
Archaeologists can reconstruct architectural elements, and even build replicas of Mississippian houses, by studying several types of indirect evidence. Because the ancient villagers would periodically burn down and then rebuild their houses, archaeologists can distinguish the different floor layers by looking for the differences between the hard-packed floor surfaces and the intervening burn layers.
