Abstract
My thesis, "Kings of the Canebrake" is a collection of twelve short stories loosely connected by recurring themes and settings. A number of the stories are set in the Mississippi Delta and explore characters seeking to make sense of their lives against complex historical currents. Other stories feature characters that are striving to make peace with various forms of regret, including professional failure and lost love. The narrative of the title story focuses on a modern-day manuscript curator who becomes increasingly obsessed with solving the disappearance of an infamous nineteenth century bear hunter. Beneath all of the stories is a concern for the ephemeral nature of experience and the yearning that results from an awareness of this condition.
