Abstract

Schneider, Fabian. DMA. The University of Memphis. March 2026. A historical informed performance guide Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 35. Major Professor: Daniel Brier. This project develops a historically informed performance framework for Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 35. Through close structural and stylistic analysis, the study situates the work within the broader symphonic traditions of nineteenth-century France and Germany, comparing Farrenc’s compositional strategies with those of selected contemporaries. Particular attention is given to formal design, thematic construction, orchestration, and harmonic language to assess both shared conventions and individual characteristics. Engaging with recent scholarship on Farrenc and reassessing long-standing claims of derivation, the project argues that similarities between her music and that of her contemporaries reflect participation in common stylistic practices rather than imitation. These analytical findings form the foundation for performance recommendations grounded in primary treatises by Leopold Mozart, Johann Joachim Quantz, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Daniel Gottlob Türk, and Johann Mattheson. The study therefore offers a historically informed interpretive guide that integrates analytical insight with nineteenth-century performance aesthetics, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of Farrenc’s symphonic voice within its historical context.
