Abstract

The obscurity of Maceda's piano works led to this study; ergo this will contribute to their understanding and significance. His "Two Pianos, Four Winds," composed in 1996 for clarinet, bassoon, horn, trombone, and two pianos, will be the focus of this study. His other piano works, "Music for Five Pianos," (1994), "Music for Two Pianos and Four Percussions," (2000), and "Sujeichon - A Korean Court Music for Four Pianos," (2002), will be briefly discussed. In order to fully comprehend the conceptual framework of his compositions, one has to be cognizant of his discourse, i.e., the influences of Western European avant-garde, and of Southeast Asian aesthetics and phiosophy as the frame of reference of his works. The objectives of this research are: to present a critical overview of how the piano is utilized amidst Maceda's philosophies of music, culture, structure and performance; to discover a method of analysis akin to his philosophy and composiitonal praxes; and to explore the performance practices of his piano works. One common yet significant factor among Maceda's four piano works is the use of piano in consonance with his philosophies of music, culture, structure and performance. In all these, the piano functions more of a drone or maker of time, and less of a lyrical instrument. In addition to the analyses of his piano works, this study includes interviews of key informants, people who worked and/or studied with Maceda. The data gathered has allowed me to delve into Maceda's professional life and into the rehearsal techniques and performance practice of his piano works.
