Equity Audits as Catalysts for Change: A Case Study on Racial Disparities in a University Spanish Language Program
Abstract
This case study applies an equity audit framework to identify and address racial disparities in the Spanish Language Program at the University of Memphis. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the audit analyzed program enrollment, success outcomes, curriculum content, and feedback from faculty and students to uncover race-based inequities affecting achievement and retention among Black students, currently underrepresented in the program. Findings reveal substantial racial inequities affecting Black students’ participation and achievement. Critical reflection on these disparities highlighted systemic issues within program structures and pedagogy, including a lack of culturally relevant content, insufficient Black faculty representation, and the need for culturally responsive teaching methodologies and community support. By proposing actionable strategies such as targeted curriculum revisions, student support initiatives, and faculty development in diversity, equity, and inclusion, this research demonstrates how equity audits can serve as powerful tools for fostering significant reform in higher education language programs to promote equitable teaching and learning.
