The writings of hardi swarsensky: Cuplability, security, compensation
Abstract
Drawing from extensive archival research in Argentina and Germany, this essay focuses on the topics of culpability, security, and compensation in the writings of Hardi Swarsensky, a Jewish German lawyer and journalist who emigrated to Buenos Aires from Berlin, Germany, in 1939. Together with the emigrant rabbi Günter Friedländer, Swarsensky cofounded and edited the weekly newspaper, La Semana Israelita, (1940-1968), as well as the monthly magazine, Porvenir (1942-1945). In addition to his frequent contributions to these publications, Swarsensky also was the author of several books and founded the publishing house Estrellas. Contextualized in the theoretical framework of nationalisms and diaspora studies (Anderson, Clifford, Boyarin), in this essay I explore how Hardi Swarsensky recurrently deploys the themes of culpability, security, and compensation to advocate for Zionist invocations of Jewish nationhood.
