Theatre and the idea of national: The Deutsches Theater (Ney-Bühne)
Abstract
Ludwig Ney was already well known on the stage when he arrived at Buenos Aires in 1938 via Paraguay. He strenghened ties with the nazi organization Kraft durch Freude which secured him a numerous audience. He started presenting rustic plays evoking the homeland with the goal of reinforcing community ties among the spectators. As from 1940 he started offering classical German plays of high integrative content which were analyzed and praised by the German Argentina nationalist press. However, the analysis of Werner Hoffmann's play Utz Schmidt, written in Buenos Aires, reveals an inner distance of emigrated Germans from the nazi spirit present in the homeland, in spite of its insistence on the identification with community values.
