Body Language Awareness: Teaching Medical Spanish Interpreting
Abstract
Based on personal experiences and observations in medical Spanish interpreting and teaching, Ruggiero provides educators with a practical pedagogical model for incorporating body language awareness into medical Spanish and interpreting courses. In the process, she problematizes the role of body language in interpreting and brings to light the issue of body language awareness in interpreting and interpreter training. The chapter includes a brief discussion of the issue of body language in interpreting, a presentation and analysis of three illustrative scenarios based on the author’s own experiences and observations in medical Spanish interpreting and teaching, and a recommendation of teaching resources and activities intended to raise awareness of body language in interpreting, including suggested readings, viewing and reflection activities, and role-play exercises.
