Researching Multimodal Genres in Higher Education: Future Directions
Abstract
This chapter serves as a conclusion to the edited volume, Multimodal Practices in Higher Education: Analyzing and Teaching Diverse Genres. It provides readers with a roadmap for future research in two main areas: (1) the analysis of multimodal genres, and (2) the implementation of multimodal genre pedagogies in higher education. Following a brief overview of the studies and major themes presented in both sections of this volume, this chapter proposes a research agenda for multimodal genre studies. Specifically, we identify under-investigated or emerging multimodal genres in higher education, highlight gaps in research on multimodal pedagogies, and recommend the adoption of theoretical frameworks for analyzing multimodal texts and/or investigating the impact of multimodal genre pedagogies on students’ learning.
