Rethinking climate security: Understanding climate change through a gendered climate security frame

Abstract

Increased severity of disasters is one of the most commonly cited impacts of climate change. Although there is a wealth of scholarly work on gender and climate change, much of the policy and academic discourse on disasters fails to adequately consider power. When we do consider the human ramifications of climate change, we often do so in ways that ignore gender. This chapter uses discourse analysis to examine climate change, disaster, and security discourses in order to identify the presence and absence of gender. It argues that while a focus on human insecurity might encompass human experiences of climate change, we must go beyond this frame in order to recognize gendered insecurity.
