Supporting novice nurse practitioner role transition through an online community of practice program

Abstract

Background: – There is a need to support novice nurse practitioners' (NPs') role transition to ensure they become successful clinicians soon after graduation. However, not all new-to-practice NPs receive structured support in their first positions. An online platform may be an effective method to support novice NPs' role transition. Purpose: – The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the feasibility of a web-based community of practice (CoP) program to support novice NPs' role transition. Methodology: – An 8-week program was developed based on the Consortium for Advanced Practice Providers' eight competency domains and the novice NP role transition framework. Novice NPs were recruited through social media and online nursing forums. Weekly meetings focused on a topic area and included open discussions. Feedback was collected from participants after each session and program completion. Results: – Nine participants enrolled in the CoP program. They found the program beneficial and enjoyed the camaraderie. Some participants were not in an NP role, but seeking support during their job search. Scheduling challenges limited participation from all members. Conclusions: – The CoP program provided much-needed support and practical information not typically covered in NP educational programs. A support network of fellow new NPs can facilitate NPs' role transition experience. Implications: – An online CoP program designed for novice NPs is a feasible way to provide the community and camaraderie many new-to-practice NPs desire during role transition. Future programs could be tailored to meet the needs of participants who are seeking NP employment or are already employed in their first position.
