Comments on Nir Ben-Moshe, idealization and the moral point of view

Abstract

Nir Ben-Moshe’s Idealization and the Moral Point of View is a lively new attempt to situate the philosophies of David Hume and Adam Smith in contemporary metaethical and normative ethical debates. The result is a high-level analysis of interpretive trends on both thinkers, against the backdrop of what has come to be known as the ‘informed desire theory’ of moral reasons. Although the balance of the argument leans towards the advantages of Adam Smith’s view, Ben-Moshe works out positive positions on both thinkers. Correspondingly, I recommend the book to scholars of Hume and Smith as well as contemporary theorists working on moral reasoning.
