Clinical issues in utilizing biofeedback with children

Abstract

This paper discusses the advantages and problems associated with employing biofeedback with children. Advantages include children's: increased enthusiasm, quicker rate of learning, reduced skepticism about self-control procedures, greater confidence in special abilities, increased psychophysiological lability, fewer previous failure experiences with treatment, increased enjoyment when practicing with home trainers, and increased reliability of symptom monitoring. Difficulties we have encountered concern children's: briefer attention span, off-task behaviors during a session, fear and apprehension about the equipment, intolerance of minor discomfort during removal of sensors, emotional and psychological problems, reduced ability to comprehend treatment rationale and procedures, scheduling problems, and lack of standardized electrode placements. Suggestions for overcoming these difficulties are offered. It is concluded that the advantages to be gained from biofeedback clearly outweight the difficulties therapists and researchers might encounter.
