Elder Abuse

Abstract

Elder abuse and neglect is a serious problem affecting thousands of older adults in the United States each year. This chapter describes various forms of elder abuse and their prevalence among older adults in the United States and internationally. This chapter also describes risk factors for elder abuse, including characteristics of older adults who may be most vulnerable to abuse as well as characteristics associated with perpetrators of abuse. Strategies for assessing elder abuse are discussed along with relevant intervention and policy implications.
