Fourteen-hertz neurofeedback for migraine
Abstract
Tansey pioneered single-band (14-hertz) neurofeedback for migraine headache and reported encouraging results with a small sample. This study attempted a replication with 7 subjects. Five (4 female, 1 male; mean age = 39) completed the 20-session, 20-minutes/session neurofeedback training protocol (2 dropped out because of family/marital difficulties). Treatment modeled Tansey's approach to the extent possible; however, no adjunctive therapies were permitted in order to provide a firmer test of the role of EEG feedback. Group data showed trends toward improvement for all headache parameters. However, only the overall headache activity score showed a statistically significant reduction from baseline to 1-month followup. It is possible that more extensive training would have enhanced outcome.
