Correction: ‘On the consistency between fluid surface tension and membrane geometric stiffness: how thick is the surface membrane?’ (2025), by Guan and Venkadesan (Proc. R. Soc. A, (2025), (481), (2327): (20250516), (10.1098/rspa.2025.0516))
Abstract
Proc. R. Soc. A 481, 20250516. (Published online 03 December 2025). (https://doi.org/10.1098/rspa.2025.0516) The following corrections have been made to this manuscript: Authorship: Madhusudhan Venkadesan is added as coauthor. The corrected author list is: Yue Guan (University of Memphis) and Madhusudhan Venkadesan (Yale University). Revised References: The following reference should be added and cited at two locations in the text: [1] The citation should appear: (1) in the Introduction, where the paper states ‘Our study builds on previous work on the elastic membrane analogy’; and (2) in the Conclusion, point (ii), in connection with bridging experimental techniques using digital image correlation. Explanation of the corrections: This paper grew out of a collaboration between Yue Guan and Madhusudhan Venkadesan (Yale University) that began during Guan’s postdoctoral appointment in Venkadesan’s group at Yale, supported by NSF CAREER Award No. 2046120. The conceptualization of the work, drawing a parallel between a pre-stressed membrane and the Young–Laplace equation and exploiting that equivalence, originated with Dr Venkadesan. The theoretical framework was subsequently developed through Dr Guan’s application of the Kirchhoff–Love plate theory and geometric stiffness to quantify that equivalence. The research methodology was developed jointly, and the work was presented at several conferences under joint authorship, including at the 19th U.S. National Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics [1]. Dr Venkadesan was also involved in writing and revising parts of the manuscript at an early stage of its development, during the preparation of a comprehensive internal draft. Following later recognition that these qualifying contributions had been overlooked during the preparation of the present manuscript, in the context of the project’s multi-year collaborative history, the authors request that the authorship record should be corrected to include Dr Venkadesan. Dr Venkadesan meets all four authorship criteria: substantial contribution to conception and design, contribution to writing and revising, final approval of the corrected version, and agreement to be accountable for the work. He is, therefore, added as a coauthor. Nikolaos Papachatzis is acknowledged for helpful discussions during the development of the work.
