Acoustic radiation force and shear wave elastography techniques
Abstract
Acoustic radiation force is a well-known physical effect from the propagation of acoustic waves. However, this effect has only recently been utilized for measuring and imaging the mechanical properties of tissue, such as elastic moduli and viscoelasticity. Here, the physical basis for acoustic radiation force in tissues is introduced and the resulting physical effects, such as shear waves, are described. Several imaging and measurement techniques using impulsive and modulated acoustic radiation forces are explored. In addition, techniques based on the observation and measurement of shear waves to extract quantitative information about the tissue are discussed. A brief introduction to the clinical applications of each of these methods is also provided.
