Social psychology and sport
Abstract
While sociologists of sports have long utilized social psychological theories and research in their work, sociological social psychologists have not been equally invested in drawing from the sociology of sports and leisure into their work. The goal of this chapter is to highlight connections between sociological social psychology and the sociology of sports to enable more research connecting these areas. Particular attention is focused on Goffman’s themes of character as a useful approach to framing the existing research connecting these two subfields. The chapter concludes by pointing to some future directions for further research in the social psychology of sports.
