A REVIEW OF RESILIENCE RESEARCH OF SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED CITIES IN GLOBAL NORTH COUNTRIES

Abstract

Small and medium-sized cities (SMCs) in the Global North face a distinct set of challenges, despite the region's advanced economic and infrastructural development. The resilience dynamics of these cities are influenced by factors such as economic restructuring, demographic shifts, and spatial inequality, which are well-documented in the urban resilience literature. While significant progress has been made in understanding the resilience of cities in the Global North, there remain notable gaps in knowledge regarding the specific resilience dynamics of SMCs. This review synthesizes key concept areas, methodological approaches, and findings within the existing body of research on the resilience of Global North SMCs. The chapter clarifies the nuanced resilience strategies employed by these cities and advances a theoretical outlook for the resilience of Global North SMCs.
