Conclusion: Toward Resilient Small and Medium-Sized Cities— Planning Implications for Africa and Beyond
Abstract
This chapter synthesizes the individual contributions in this book to offer a contextual understanding of resilience planning in Ghana's small and medium-sized cities (SMCs). It first summarizes the reported resilience challenges and identifies barriers undermining resilience planning efforts in Ghana's SMCs, such as data scarcity, unequal access to resources, growing socio-spatial inequalities, and the continuous overlooking of SMCs in favor of large cities in Ghana's urban planning paradigm. The chapter then highlights the role of urban planning in addressing these resilient challenges to advocate for resilience planning efforts that engage and leverage varied actors synergistically to enhance the resilience of SMCs. It cautions that urban resilience planners and institutions should desist from offering blanket solutions to the challenges of Ghana's SMCs without recourse to their unique urbanization processes and consequences. To conclude, the chapter calls for increased attention and more research on the resilience of Ghana's and Africa's SMCs.
