Revisiting geography of cities from the high school geography project in the social studies classroom
Abstract
In the 1960s, the High School Geography Project (HSGP) was developed in the effort to improve geography’s status within high school social studies curriculum. Now, nearly 50 years later, can selected units and activities be implemented in today’s social studies curriculum? This article attempts to rekindle students’ interest in geography education using an activity from the book Geography of Cities from the High School Geography Project (HSGP). Teachers were provided several lessons to select from to help bring the content alive and enhance student understanding of how the natural physical environment influenced the founding of communities.
